CONNIE ZAMORANO
la chicharra
La Chicharra was founded in 2014 from a profound longing for the ephemeral beauty of the past and a desire to forge intimate connections with the natural world. Working exclusively with insects discovered deceased or thoughtfully gifted, each piece becomes a vessel for new memories—quiet bridges between lived experience and future nostalgia. These delicate beings, once admired and adopted by others, invite us to pause and cherish the intricate wonders that surround us daily.
Not every creature is found in pristine condition; having lived its brief existence, it carries the marks of time. With the care of a restorer, I occasionally mend or harmonize elements to illuminate the inherent elegance and complexity of a life once vibrantly lived. Eschewing the clinical precision of traditional entomological pinning, I compose each work within gathered foliage and natural settings. These arrangements evoke memories that feel spontaneously orchestrated—poignant, layered, and subject to the gentle shifts of time and perception.
Through this practice, I seek kinship with fellow admirers of nature: those who find solace in its cycles of life, decay, and renewal; who recognize in the smallest creatures a mirror for our own transience and resilience. La Chicharra honors the overlooked marvels of the everyday, transforming quiet endings into enduring celebrations of wonder.
