“Drapery can be perceived as covering something and at the same time as revealing or about to reveal something” Gen Doy.
Through two-dimensional representations, I explore gendered physical relationships between males of a particular age bracket and my struggle with impermeable implications that go along with different gender's involvement in these physical rituals. I am interested in levels of reality, sensuality, texture and drapery that permeate the physicality of figures and boundaries.
The manifestation of drapery plays several important roles in the imagery. The folds in the fabric are a type of artifact that records the history of movement. The residual motion gives the affected fabric the implication of physical and allegorical tension as well as a release in my attempt to encapsulate the essence of the interactions. It is rendered in a way that mimics lush Hellenistic sculpture in order to amplify the objectification and monumentality of my personal perspective.
The drapery, becoming its own entity, engulfing the entangled figures. It is often used as a form of protection (as clothing) which implies close contact with the body. The I experiences the physical and emotional exclusion from the rituals, leaving unfulfilled curiosity and longing for that foreign type of contact.
